Thirteen

Even though I asked Sky on the date, he insisted he plan everything, so I had no idea what we were going to do. I dressed in jeans and a cute tan sweater that hung off one shoulder. I had my coat waiting on the banister and was playing with my curls, waiting for him to arrive when Dad walked into the kitchen.

“You look nice,” he remarked as he straightened his tie.

“You too. What are you guys doing tonight?”

He mentioned he had a date planned with Juliet, but I never asked for details.

“She talked me into trying a new restaurant she heard about. It’s got some weird menu where they serve the entrées on shovels.”

I grimaced. “You hate those places.”

He nodded. “I do. But I love her, and she thinks they’re fun. Occasionally.”

“You’re going to get a burger afterward, aren’t you?” I teased.

“Probably.” He shook his head and laughed. “I’m going to be late if I don’t leave now. Tell Sky I said hello and that he better treat you like a lady.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’ll warn him.”

He kissed my forehead on his way to the garage. “I’ll let you know if I end up coming back late.”

“No problem,” I called out before the door shut behind him.

Sky still had another few minutes before he was late, but I thought he’d be too excited to wait. When I finally heard his Jeep pull into the driveway, I hurried to pull on my coat and met him outside.

“I was going to come up to the door,” he whined with a tease as I jumped into his arms.

“I couldn’t wait.” I hugged him and kissed his cheek, making him blush.

“I’m glad you’re excited.” He opened my door and helped me in before going around to the driver’s side.

“So where are we going? What are we doing?” I bit my lip, trying to contain my excitement. I didn’t want to make him feel pressured, but I was expecting him to have something crazy planned—although I’d be fine driving through somewhere and eating in his car. No matter what we did, we always had fun together.

“I’m not going to ruin the surprise. You’re going to have to wait until we get there.” He picked up my hand and kissed the back before pulling away from my house.

“Fine.” I pouted for a few seconds.

As he drove, I caught him stealing glances at me. “What?” I finally asked.

“You look beautiful.” His eyes ran over my face then down to my boots, and I nearly shivered.

“You look nice, too,” I admitted before I lost the courage. Normally, I had no problem telling the guys when they looked handsome, but this was different. This was our first date, and I was nervous.

He’d obviously made an effort tonight. His normally mused hair was styled to the side, and he was wearing a button-up shirt over his jeans that clung to his arms.

The drive was pretty short. I thought for a moment we were going to laser tag, which wouldn’t have surprised me, but Sky pointed to the next building.
